For February 2013, Perkins Garages Ltd would like to announce the arrival of NEW SUBARU cars to our family of vehicles that we offer for sale.
Established in 1886, Perkins have always offered it's valued customers quality service, attention to detail and great products to experience.
In 1886, James Perkins (1861-1927), Jimmy to his friends, began a bicycle manufacturing business from the front room of his home in Crownfield Road, Leyton - now part of the London Borough of Waltham Forest. Jimmy aquired his skills from his father who worked as a Blacksmith and with such engineering influence and being a keen competitive cyclist of some repute, Jimmy was particulary interested in improving the design of racing bicycles which, at the time, had some way to go in their development. The result was the birth of the hand built Crownfield bicycle.
By 1899 Jimmy's business has expanded considerably as his bikes ,with their special lightweight frames, had become popular within the racing fraternity and he started to receive orders nationally as well as from around the world. In this same year, as money was tight with many working -class people who relied on using a bicycle to get to work, Jimmy introduced his own Hire Purchase agreements so customers could pay for their bike over 1 year.
By the start of the 20th century, Jimmy had began to manufacture motorcycles and had developed an adjustable pulley belt design that could accomodate all known motorcycle engines in Britain and Europe and as this product began to sell all over the world, until the invention of chain driven technolgy, the Perkins business began to take shape.
Fast forward to the 1950's ( we do have a history of Perkins booklet in both of our showrooms if you want to pop in and pick one up ) and Perkins became a Ford car and truck Dealer in Leyton in East London which is where the motor car business story begins.
Today , the Perkins Group of companies are a very diverse operation from New and Used Vehicles sales and service to engine re-manufacturing, Environmental Waste removal and recycling along with commercial body manufacturing, Precision Engineering and Rapid Prototype modelling.
We added to the business of Nearly New Ford cars and Vans an MG Franchise in 2008 which has a steadily growing model range of cars and have now intruduced SUBARU to our family and it fits in beautifully.
