New MG GS Road Test Report -5 Year 80k Warranty
MG and Perkins have now got another MG in stock that's an all round winner. Owned by SAIC, the state owned car manufacturer in China that produces 5.5 million cars each year, the MG GS SUV mid-sized car has hit the streets and it's turning out to be just what was required in this ever changing new car market.
The GS is priced from £14995 and £20995 for the top of the range EXCLUSIVE model with a just brilliant 5 year 0% finance offer on PCP to match it's 5 year / 80000 miles manufacturer warranty. That is pretty confident of a well built, high specification new car. The chassis and transmissions have been developed along with General Motors and whilst all models are equipped with the 164 bhp, 1.5 litre Four cylinder turbocharged, direct injection manual or twin clutch Auto 7 speed and front wheel drive, this is a superb, smooth and quiet new engine into the market and it does not disappoint. The body design, overseen at Longbridge under design head guru Anthony Williams-Kenny is attractive against the competition with unique and new lines for our eyes to get familiar with. The interior is roomy, with space in the back for three adults, plenty of head and leg room in the front and the boot is a healthy 483 litres and 1336 litres with the seats folded into the perfectly flat floor. Cabin quality is specification all match up well to alternatives and with Cruise Control, Auto Headlamps and Air Conditioning all fitted to the base models and Leather, Sat Nav, Hill Hold, DAB Radio, Bluetooth and Reverse parking sensors fitted to the EXCLUSIVE models, there is clear blue water between this car and other competitors like the Nissan Qashqai or the Kia Sportage.
The twin dial instrument cluster is clear and the touch sceen information centre of the car is quick and easy to operate. Switches operate positively and use it once and it all feels familiar straght away. Well thought out....we thought. The engine is smooth, with decent mid range torque, slight turbo lag on the Auto but with a very smooth lift off from rest so it actually favours the car rather than hinders the driving experience. The EU combined figure we feel is a bit high in real work driving at 53.2 mpg for the maual car. Our demonstrator has now covered 1000 miles and as an Auto EXCLUSIVE model, we are getting 43.5 mpg combined...still impressive we thought, right up there with The Ford Kuga Ecoboost engine...which is impressive in it's own right. As for the suspension and ride, well with MacPherson front strut and a multi link rear, the power steering has electronic assistance which picks up the feel of the road as much as you would want it to and with ABS, Electronic brakeforce distribution, active roll protection and airbags a plenty, safety for you and your passengers is where we all want it to be.
The chassis set up is sporty and agile with no alraming body roll (unlike some of the competition) , the steering is well weighted and direct and the brakes are good, progressive and perfectly reasonable stopping power. At speed the car is quiet and with over 25 customer road tests before that we have completed over the past few weeks, passengers have commented that the steering is firm, potholes don't seem to unruffle the ride and there is a high level of comfort throughout the experience. Must be ok as we have taken 18 orders so far and as the new stock arrives, customers are getting their colour and gearbox choices approved and as deliveries begin over the next few weeks and months, you will see more and more of the New MG GS on the road as well as the television adverts.
When it comes to the MG brand well the past is the past. We all remember MG sports cars that we have owned or our parents / grand parents owned and we have our own classic MG's parked in our garages.......a 1954 MG TF and V8 MGB GT but today's modern MG is a totally new prospect and a very good motor car at an excellent price, paired up with a superb finance deal ( 5 years 0% Finance PCP with a 20% deposit) and with a 5 year warranty to match, this car could be taking you places this year. Perkins MG have been waiting for the arrival of the New MG GS and our verdict is that it is dynamically sharp with a gutsy engine, sharp handling and a comfortable ride at an affordable package.
